Philippine Airlines: Home to the Best Pilots in the Philippines

There is a saying among frequent Filipino fliers that Philippine Airlines, the country's flag carr may have the worst flight attendants, but it certainly has the best pilots in the country. The reputation of pilots from the Philippine Airlines is unmatched by any other major airline in the country and even a few other airlines outside the country. In fact, pilots employed by Philippine Airlines are often 'pirated' by foreign airlines because of their talent and skill.

As a regular civilian airplane rider, I had the chance to compare various airlines through the way the planes take off and the way they ride. My flights that I had aboard a Philippine Airlines or Air Philippines Express (the company's budget airline alternative) flight are always seamless and comfortable. I would regularly sleep while on the flight and, before I know it, we've already landed without me noticing it.

In contrast, flights aboard leading budget airlines Cebu Pacific can border on scary, especially when we are already landing. Landings are always hard and noisy, waking up even those who are in deep sleep. There was even a time when I slightly bounced off my chair even in my seatbelt because of the awful landing. It used to be wrong to compare Philippine Airlines with Cebu Pacific because the latter is only a budget airline, but noticing how good the landing is with Air Philippines, I should say there really is a noticeable difference.

Pilots of Philippine Airlines and Air Philippines normally come from the airlines' own flight school, the Philippine Airlines Aviation School. This aviation school boasts of producing the best pilots in the country. It also takes pride in the fact that it is the first aviation school of its kind anywhere in Asia.

Cebu Pacific may be cheaper, which may be said to be the main reason why it is still ahead in the budget airline space. However, it cannot be denied that the overall experience, landing and takeoff, is inferior.

Now if Philippine Airlines can only do something about its nasty flight attendants...
